Netherlands 2-1 Brazil - as it happened
Hello and welcome to espnstar's coverage of the first quarter-final between giants the Netherlands and Brazil.
Hi everyone this is Dave bringing you all the action as it happens.
0' - Kick off!!
7' - Goal! No wait its been ruled out. Robinho sticks it in the net but early replays show he's just a touch offside. GREAT spot by the linesman.
10' - GOAL 1-0 Brazil - Robinho
10' - What a start from Brazil, the Dutch are being simply ripped apart here. No flag this time as Robinho judges Felipe Melo's pass to perfection before slotting the ball into the bottom right corner. Exactly the start Dunga would have wanted.
15' - Robben is fouled on the edge of the Brazilian box. Van Persie tries to bend it but the ball flies harmlessly into the stands. The first signs of life from the Dutch.
20' - 20 minutes gone here and the Netherlands have recovered well. They're having most of the possession and are breaking up the Brazilian passing. Still looking for their first shot on target though.
24' - De Jong brings down Kaka in the Netherlands' Box, but its only a corner.
25' - What a chance that was. The Dutch fail to clear the resulting corner and a Dani Alves cross falls to Juan right in front of goal, only for the defender to launch the ball about 5 yards over the bar. Had that been Luis Fabiano this score could have easily been 2-0.
30' - Football at its finest. Robinho beats at least 4 Dutch players before the ball falls Kaka who tries to curl it in from 25 yards. Stekelenburg somehow gets his fingertips to it and pushes it round the post. Great play all round.
35' - Dutch keeper Stekelenburg is 6ft 4 inches and needed every bit of that to keep out Kaka. Save of the tournament so far.
41' - Kaka is having his best performance of 2010 so far and is finding plenty of space in front of the Netherlands back-line. He releases Bastos down the right but his cross is eventually half-cleared. Frantic Defending from the Dutch.
45' - You wont get back into it like that... Robben finds himself in space on the edge of Brazil's box but takes about 10 touches too many and is tackled. They'll need to take more shots if they want to make the semi-finals.
45' Meanwhile at the other end Maicon goes on one of his runs before slamming a low drive towards Stekelenburg's near post. Its the side netting but yet another warning for the Dutch defense.
Half Time
The first 45 minutes are up and its Brazil who hold the advantage thanks to Robinho's early goal. In fairness to the Dutch the have recovered well but possession won't get you anywhere unless it leads to shots. Some shaky defending means they could easily be further behind but they'll be happy to still be in this. Still all to play for.
45' - The teams are back out for the second half. Doesn't look like there are any changes from either team but expect that to change if the Dutch fail to get an early goal.
49' - Its better from the Netherlands, Van Persie holds up the ball well before laying it off to Sneijder about 20 yards out. The shot goes well wide but at least they're finding more space than they did in the first half.
52' - Michel Bastos you lucky boy. Robben leaves the Brazilian for dead and goes down. Should be a second yellow but he gets away with it.
53' - Goal 1-1 Netherlands - Sneijder
53' - Unbelievable. Sneijder whips a deep cross into the Brazilian box which goes right over the head of Julio Cesar in the South American's net. Looks like Cesar and Felipe Melo got in each others way and the ball just touched off the midfielder's head on the way in. Uncharacteristic mistake from one of the world's best keepers. Game on.
59' - What a difference a goal makes. The Dutch are suddenly on top in Port Elizabeth and Robben is tourmenting Brazlian left-back Michel Bastos. Haven't seen Dunga for a while but he must be fuming.
62' - Sub - Gilberto on for Michel Bastos
62' - Clever move from Dunga. Bastos was on a yellow card and was struggling against Robben. Brazil are under pressure.
66' - Goal - 2-1 Netherlands - Sneijder
66' - Was just about to tell you that the first Netherlands goal has been taken away from Sneijder and given as a Felipe Melo own goal. But he won't mind now. Dirk Kuyt gets to the near post and flicks on a Dutch corner before Sneijder heads it straight into the top left corner. No Brazilian touch on that one but terrible defending from Dunga's side to leave him unmarked. What a turn around this second half has seen.
73' - Red Card - Felipe Melo
73' It's going to bad from worse for Brazil as Felipe Melo is shown a straight red for stamping on Arjen Robben's hamstring. A moment of madness from the Juventus man right in front of the referee and total deserving of the sending off. Brazil are losing it here.
75' - Its getting heated in Port Elizabeth. Moments after Robinho confronts Robben at one end, Kaka is clipped as he tries to take a quick throw in. Don't expect everyone left to make the final whistle at this rate.
80' - Ten minutes left for Brazil to stay in the competition, and both sides are looking nervy. The South American's pile on the pressure with a sequence of corners that are bundled off the line by the Dutch. The tension is unbelievable.
84' - Brazil break with Kaka but the playmaker can't get past the fullbacks and his shot is deflected for a corner.
84' - Sub - Huntelaar on for Van Persie.
84' - The Corner comes to nothing and lets the Dutch make a change. Its a weird one, Van Persie is replaced by fellow striker Huntelaar. The Dutch are obviously looking to put the game beyond reach.
88' - Here we go. Lucio is brought down by Van Bommel on the edge of the Dutch box. If ever they needed some of that samba magic its now.
89' - Nothing doing. the free kick goes into the wall and Brazil will have to start all over again.
90' - Three minutes of stoppage time. The Dutch are almost in the semi-finals.
93' - FULL TIME - NETHERLANDS 2-1 BRAZIL
Its all over, what a game we've seen here tonight. The Netherlands are going to Cape Town for their first semi-final since 1998 and the 5-time champions are out. Constrasting emotions as Dani Alves wipes tears from his eyes and the Dutch celebrate with their fans. Arjen Robben was unstoppable today, could this Netherlands class of 2010 finally win international football's greatest prize? It may not be total football but it seems to be working.
This is the second successive time the Brazilians have fallen at the quarter-final stage. Are we seeing the decline of a world footballing power? Because Brazil were clearly second-best tonight.
Well folks thats all for now. Thanks for joining us here at espnstar, hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. Don't forget to come back for Uruguay vs Ghana. Kick off is at 0230 Singapore time. See you then!
