Indian lifter fails dope test

Indian weightlifter Monika Devi has tested positive for steroids and has been withdrawn from the Beijing Games.

Monika, who was the lone Indian lifter in the contingent, tested positive just hours before her departure to Beijing.

The Manipuri lifter, who was to compete in the 69 kg category, was selected to the squad amidst allegations of bribery.

In the pre-Olymic trial conducted by Indian Weightlifting Federation in July this year, P Sailja of Andhra Pradesh had performed better than Monika but the latter was chosen ahead of her.

However, earlier in April this year, Monica had done better in the Asian Championship in Japan.

Perhaps, the silver lining in the latest doping scandal to hit India is that the athlete was not disgraced in front of the world, and was withdrawn before the Games.
