Alonso to remain defiant
Fernando Alonso has admitted he must deliver a “super performance” in the second half of the season to reign as the top dog.
Despite claiming the 2005 and 2006 World Championship crowns while playing his trade with Renault, the Spaniard’s hopes of a hat-trick of titles with the French outfit has gone up in smoke due to the car’s deficiencies, falling well short of the standards set by the likes of McLarens and Ferrari. However, Alonso feels that he can still showcase his number one status even without winning the title but acknowledges the need to start producing performances reminiscent of his double title winning days.
"I'll keep fighting for a podium or even a victory this year because that will prove that I'm still here," Alonso told F1 Racing magazine.
"I want to prove to everybody that I'm still the best so I need a super performance to do that, which means a podium or a win.
"And I'll be trying to do it in the second part of the season."
"There was a bit of frustration when I saw that I wouldn't win races or get on the podium," he admitted. "But it's still a challenge to beat our main opponents and that’s the motivation to keep doing my best."
