Teams to get behind engine plan
Five F1 teams are poised to embrace FIA president Max Mosley's idea of a cost-saving standardised engine from 2010.
Mosley proposed a deadline of Thursday for teams to sign up to his brainchild and it is likely the four independent teams of Williams, Force India, Red Bull and Toro Rosso will all sign up, with the surprise being one of the major manufacturers in Renault.
"The FIA can confirm that since the president's letter last Friday, there has been a very positive response from the F1 teams regarding our engine proposals," confirmed an FIA spokesman.
"It would, however, be inappropriate to comment on the reaction of any individual team, or give any further details, in advance of the World Council meeting this Friday."
Renault have refused to comment on the matter, although their silence potentially speaks volumes in this instance.
Mosley is due to meet with the remaining nine representatives of the Formula One Teams' Association in Monaco on Wednesday when cost-cutting issues will again be top of the agenda.
That will then be followed by Friday's meeting of the FIA World Council at which the teams involved appear set to be confirmed.
The remaining marques in Ferrari, McLaren - in conjunction with Mercedes-Benz - BMW Sauber and Toyota will have two options open to them: to build their own engine to the same specification as Mosley`s proposed Cosworth, or continue to use their existing units, but on a par in terms of performance.
