Lewis Hamilton is adamant he is proud to be British, despite the furore often raised by his decision to live in Switzerland.
The debate stirred again recently when Hamilton was awarded an MBE. Despite becoming the youngest world champion in Formula One history in the most dramatic of circumstances, many critics felt he was not worthy of his gong after choosing to live in tax exile in Geneva.
"I'm still British and I still represent my country, and that's what is most important." said Hamilton.
"I wasn't around when it (Honours list) was announced, and so I didn't get to hear all the banter that went on.
"All I can say is I'm happy where I am. People make decisions in life, and it's something I don't regret.
"I probably wouldn't be in the position I am now if I hadn't have made it. But when I go to any of the races and I represent my country, it doesn't mean I hold a different flag."
Prime minister Gordon Brown certainly did not consider Hamilton's place of domicile when he invited the 24-year-old to Downing Street just prior to Christmas.
It was an event deliberately kept low key, but another honourable moment for Hamilton in the wake of being crowned F1's new king.
"It was very cool, very humbling, and he is a very pleasant man," remarked Hamilton on the experience and of Brown.
"He welcomed me into his home, showed me the art collection he had, showed me around the building, and it was incredible."
