Primacy or reliability?
In Engine Block’s "Rumble Strip" this week, we ask: Should the "Winner takes all" system be implemented in F1?
Just over a week before F1's season-opening race in Australia, the FIA implemented a new points system that puts the emphasis on race wins rather than accumulated points. The "winner takes all" rule received mixed reactions from followers of the sport but teams and drivers are unanimous in their dissent. To head off the possibility of a boycott, the FIA did a 360 just four days later to rescind the rule and delay execution to 2010. On the one hand, the system could have encouraged more spirited performances with drivers going all out for the win yet on the other, it would have favoured aggression more than consistency.
All in all the title would have changed hands on 13 occasions had the system been around since the first F1 championship in 1950. Most recently, Felipe Massa would have emerged the victor last year with his 6 Grand Prix wins over Lewis Hamilton's 5, altering the Brit's historic turn as youngest World Champion at 23.
