Kobayashi joins usual suspects in F1

Kamui Kobayashi will be relying on his computer game skills to tame one of the most feared circuits in Formula One.

The young Japanese driver is being thrown in at the deep end this weekend by Toyota as he will tackle the Brazilian Grand Prix at Interlagos in the absence of Timo Glock.

Glock is out after cracking a vertebra in an accident in qualifying for the Japanese Grand Prix 11 days ago.

With a ban on in-season testing, Kobayashi's only time behind the wheel of an F1 car this year was in Friday practice in Japan when Glock was ill, and then just for a handful of laps in the wet.

It is hardly ideal preparation for driving at Interlagos, which is made all the more difficult as it is one of just four anti-clockwise circuits on the calendar.

At least relishing the rare chance afforded to him, the 23-year-old said: "This is an incredible opportunity for me to make my grand prix debut.

"But of course it is a pity for Timo as I know how much he was looking forward to getting back to racing.

"Fortunately for me I had some time in the car on Friday in Suzuka and, even though that was in the wet, it will be very helpful for me this weekend.

"Although I have never driven at Interlagos before, I know the lay-out from computer games and television, so I don't think it will take too long to learn.

"It's still going to be a tough weekend but I feel ready for the challenge and I know the team is supporting me 100%."

It is no surprise that all Kobayashi is hoping for is to cross the finishing line on Sunday.

"A few days ago I wasn't even expecting to be racing this weekend so it's impossible to set any targets," added Kobayashi.

"I just want to do myself proud and complete the race without any problems. Anything after that is a bonus."
