Kobayashi wins GP2 Asia title

Dams’ Kamui Kobayashi has sealed the GP2 Asia Series after finishing fourth in the final weekend’s Feature Race.

Brazilian youngster Diego Nunes won the last Feature Race of season, beating out team-mate Roldan Rodriguez and Jérôme d'Ambrosio for the win.

Local boy Hamad Al Fardan had to retire from the race after a sensor on his car failed, much to the dismay of his countrymen who turned out in big numbers to support him.

Kobayashi's win in the Formula One support race added to his F1 team's joy following a 1-2 finish in qualifying by Jarno Trulli and Timo Glock.

The Japanese race secured pole for the race but struggled mightily during the opening laps. He managed to get back in the swing of things, and finished 15.282 seconds behind Nunes, who claimed the 33-lap race in just under an hour.

Rodriguez made sure of a one-two finish for Piquet GP, finishing 4.906 seconds behind his teammate.

Kobayashi's Dams colleague d'Ambrosio rounded out the top three. He crossed the finish 7.905 seconds off the winner's pace.

Hamad had to report and start from the pit lane after the Gulf Finance House iSport team tried to remedy the situation after the formation lap. There was no quick solution to the problem and he was forced to retire from the race after just seven laps.

Hamad's teammate Giedo van der Garde managed to finish in the points. The Dutchman started fifth and finished in the same position, 20.774s behind of Nunes.

"It was disappointing for Hamad to only be able to complete a few laps," iSport team principal Paul Jackson said. "It looks like a sensor failed on the grid which caused the gear change to malfunction. We tried to fix it but the problem was still there, so we will be looking into what happened and have the car repaired for the sprint."

Hamad was part of the seven men, out of 26 racers, to miss the final classification.

The top eight will now reverse their positions on the grid in the final race of the season.

Results (top eight): 1 D Nunes 59:59.025; 2 R Rodriguez +4.906s; 3 J d'Ambrosio +7.905s; 4 K Kobayashi +15.282s; 5 G van der Garde +20.774s; 6 S Yamamoto +31.624s; 7 D Rigon +48.010s; 8 L Razia +50.923s.
