Casey Stoner scoops BMW

Marlboro Ducati rider Casey Stoner won the BMW M Award at Jerez after setting the fastest time on the final day of testing.

The Australian rider was quickest around the Spanish circuit on the final day of testing as he scored a psychological blow in his battle with defending champion Valentino Rossi ahead of the FIM MotoGP World Championship season.

Stoner's best lap of one minute 38.646 seconds earned him the keys of a brand new BMW 135i in the livery of the BMW Sauber F1 team.

Stoner and Rossi look to be the main contenders for the 2009 title after the Italian was second quickest with a time of 1:39.365 on the Fiat Yamaha.

Rizla Suzuki's Loris Capirossi and Chris Vermeulen were third and fifth respectively with Rossi's team-mate Jorge Lorenzo setting the fourth best time.

The main surprise of the final day of testing was the sixth place of MotoGP rookie Mika Kallio on the Pramac Ducati.

With Dani Pedrosa missing the test because of injury it was left to Andrea Dovizioso to be Repsol Honda's leading rider at Jerez and he set the seventh best time with Sete Gibernau one place further back on the Grupo Francisco Hernando Ducati.

San Carlo Honda Gersini rider Toni Elias and Monster Yamaha Tech 3's Colin Edwards completed the top 10.

It was another bad day for Edwards' team-mate James Toseland, who suffered a bad fall during a previous test, as the British rider crashed 15 minutes before the end of the session.

Toseland was not believed to be seriously injured after his fall which led to the session being stopped briefly as he received medical attention at the side of the circuit.
