Mobile ESPN’s Shreyas Sharma finds out which Indian team is making news in two-wheeler category.
Call it the watershed moment in the world of motorbike racing for India. Having made a mark in the four-wheel world with the likes of Narain Karthikeyan, Karun Chandhok and Vijay Mallya's Force India Formula One team, Indians are now trying to take the world by storm on two wheels as well. Red Rooster Racing, a Bangalore-based integrated racing company, has launched a team to compete in all six races of the Petronas FIM Asian GP series. The team raced in the Malaysian Super Series in 2008, with success in both Expert and Novice categories.
The bikes will be raced by K. Rajini and Preetham Dev Moses in all six rounds, and Rohit Giri and Sameer Venugopalan for the India round due to take place in September.
Rajini was runner-up in the 600cc Supersport Expert Class in the Malaysian Super Series, as well as being the national champion in the150cc Group B modified 4-strokes class in UCAL Rolon National Road Racing Championship in 2008, a title he has held since 2005.
Moses can possibly justify his name, since he is the one who has shown Indian riders the promised land, having become the first Indian to test a MotoGP 125cc bike. He also received five 'Wild Cards' by Dorna to take part in the 250cc World Championships in 2008.
Giri was the runner-up in the 600cc Supersport Novice category of the Malaysian Super Series in 2008 and won 28 trophies and the championship in Category D 110-160cc.
The team's Managing Director, Dinesh Reddy, said in a press release: "Red Rooster Racing's participation in the FIM Asian GP is the first step taken by an Indian team into the higher echelons of two wheeler competition in the world. Our riders K.Rajini and Preetham Dev Moses, we believe, have what it takes to compete and challenge the best Asian talent. As I said, this is our first step and we are confident of putting up a fair show."
Team Director Amit Sandill remarked: "The team is all geared up for the event. Each of the team members have had an eventful year 2008. They will be riding the modified Yamaha R6's, which comes under the Supersport 600 cc class. I have given special focus to enhance performance of the motorcycles and the riders and ensure good results."
The FIM Asia Road Racing Championship is Asia's premier motorcycle road racing championship, featuring two race classes - Underbone 4-stroke, single cylinder and Supersport 4-stroke, 4 cylinders.
The qualifying age is 13 years for Underbone and 16 years for Supersport. The championship spans the Asian continent, moving from Malaysia, to Japan, Indonesia, India and China. It attracts participation from the Australia, Great Britain and New Zealand as well, apart from the host countries.
