Balzsay claims WBO title

Balzsay claims WBO title

Karoly Balzsay claimed the WBO super-middleweight title with victory over the previously-unbeaten Denis Inkin.

The Hungarian, based in Hamburg, claimed a unanimous points decision after 12 rounds in Magdeburg, Germany on Saturday night.

The win made it 20 wins from 20 fights for Balzsay, but Inkin suffered his first defeat in his 35-fight career.

Inkin had beaten Fulgencio Zuniga last year to win the title vacated by Joe Calzaghe when he stepped up to light-heavyweight.

However, on this occasion he dropped the points verdict, going down on the scorecards by margins of 116-112 (twice) and 115-113.

On the same bill, Zsolt Erdei maintained his unbeaten record against Yuri Barashian, also on points.

However, Erdei's WBO light-heavyweight title was not on the line after his opponent failed to make the 175lbs weight.

The Hungarian was awarded the decision by margins of 116-111, 117-110 and 116-111 by the judges, with Barashian deducted a point on all the cards for a low blow in the ninth round.
