Akhil in a fix after promotion
SportsCenter's Achint Gupta speaks to ace Indian boxer Akhil Kumar and finds out how neglected he has been.
There would be a temptation to call it SportsCenter's knockout punch.
Following a string of stories on ESPN's prime time news show, ace Indian boxer Akhil Kumar today got a long, overdue promotion with his employers the Indian Railways.
Such was Akhil's disgust that earlier on Tuesday he resigned from Railways and decided to accept Haryana Police's offer of a position as Deputy Superintendent of Police. He told ESPN STAR SPORTS: "I had thought that whichever organisation will give me the appointment letter first I will join there and Haryana Police's letter came last Saturday....now with Railways relenting I really don't know which way to go."
In a surprising turn of events, Akhil didn't get his due inspite of the fact that Union Ralilway Minister Laloo Prasad Yadav announced the promotion after the boxer's return from Beijing Olympics. "What do I say? Despite the minister's announcement I didn't get the letter. I kept talking to Railway board's Rakesh Yadav (Secretary RSPB) but only got assurances in return. I think the lower brass of officers is useless. I was told that I should meet certain people for the job but I cannot be expected to keep rotating with my file from one office to another during my training time," Akhil said.
On the other hand there are cricketers getting timely promotion. This aspect too has irked the boxer. "I don't want to name the Ranji cricketers who are sitting at the position of Sports Officers in Railways. More so, I have got the Arjuna award and they haven't still there isn't much promotion for us. How can one even compare a Ranji player to a player who has won Arjuna award?"
Akhil urged that people in government offices should keep in mind the sentiments of the sportspersons.
"I had the option of going to Haryana Police or staying with Railways. With someone like me, it won't have much impact except that I'd miss working with my Railways coach Jaidev Bisht if I don't stay on with Railways. But there are other sportspersons who must be running from pillar to post to get that elusive promotion."
