De La Hoya pondering future

De La Hoya pondering future

Oscar de La Hoya admits he is still undecided about whether to return to the boxing ring or to retire from the sport.

The 35-year-old six-weight, 10-time world champion was dismantled over eight rounds by Manny Pacquiao at welterweight in Las Vegas last December, a comprehensive defeat at the hands of a fighter many believed was too small to offer a genuine threat to the American.

In the ring following his laboured and unimpressive performance, De La Hoya told Pacquiao's trainer and his own former handler Freddie Roach: "You were right, I just don't have it anymore." Yet despite the speculation that his sixth defeat in a 45-fight professional career would be his last time with the gloves on, De La Hoya on Tuesday said he still had not made up his mind.

"You know, I really haven't made a decision," De La Hoya said in New York as he publicised a Mixed Martial Arts fight his company Golden Boy is promoting this weekend.

"I've been thinking about that, I've been going back and forth and everybody and their mother is telling me to hang them up, but I have to be certain.

"There are a lot of questions out there, obviously. People will come up to me and say 'why were you so light?' or 'were you overtrained?', 'why didn't you have (former trainer Floyd) Mayweather senior in your corner?'

"So there are all those questions."

De La Hoya admitted that those closest to him have asked him to retire to concentrate on his role as president of Golden Boy Promotions.

"My family and even my wife will tell me 'Enough! Accept it. That's it. You don't have it no more, just accept it'.

"So I really haven't made that firm decision. I've been vacationing and not thinking about it, just being with the family but hopefully soon I will make that firm and last decision and we'll see what happens.

"There are a lot of questions out there that need to be answered and I'll figure it out."

Golden Boy, which has promoted or co-promoted many of the biggest fights of the last few years, including De La Hoya vs Floyd Mayweather Jr, Mayweather vs. Ricky Hatton and Bernard Hopkins v. Joe Calzaghe, moves into MMA this weekend for the first time.

Golden Boy is presenting Affliction M1 "Day of Reckoning" at the Anaheim Centre in California on Saturday night with the heavyweight contest between Fedor Emelianenko of Russia and Chicago-based Belarussian Andrei Arlovski topping the bill.
