Olympic hero caught bong-ing

America's 14-times Olympic gold medalist swimmer Michael Phelps was caught inhaling from a pipe containing cannabis.

Phelps who achieved a record eight gold medals in one games at the Beijing Olympics 2008 was caught puffing by News of the world.

He was caught with the pipe at a party back in November when he was taking a long break away from the pool after his record-breaking feat in China.

One party-goer on site told News of the World: "He was out of control from the moment he got there.

"If he continues to party like that, I'd be amazed if he ever won any more medals again."

Phelps himself came out to admit that he did it but claimed that it was a one-off instance and will not be repeated again.

The record breaker issued an apology and said that his actions were "regrettable" and "demonstrated bad judgement".

The USOC - who named Phelps as its Sportsman of the Year in 2008 - also gave their take on the issue.

"We are disappointed in the behaviour recently exhibited by Michael Phelps," the statement read.

"Michael is a role model and he is well aware of the responsibilities and accountability that come with setting a positive example for others, particularly young people.

"In this instance, regrettably, he failed to fulfil those responsibilities.

"Michael has acknowledged that he made a mistake and apologised for his actions.

"We are confident that, going forward, Michael will consistently set the type of example we all expect from a great Olympic champion."
