"India safe for Oz athletes"

"India safe for Oz athletes"

The Australian Commonwealth Games chief Sam Coffa has said his athletes would go to India for the 2010 CWG Games in Delhi.

Tennis Australia's refusal to send a team for the Davis Cup tie in Chennai had fuelled speculation that athletes Down Under are considering backing out from the Commonwealth Games as well but Coffa denied the rumours.

"At this point of time there is absolutely no suggestion whatsoever that the Australian team would not participate in the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth games," Coffa told PTI Bhasha from Australia.

But Coffa admitted that there are security concerns.

"No constituent federation has officially raised the issue of security concerning the games with me. However, that does not mean that people are not concerned," said the veteran administrator, who recently visited India to take stock of the Games' preparations.

"Naturally security matters are of great concern for us, not only in relation to the Games but also for any other major sporting event worldwide. We will monitor the situation and take whatever precaution necessary. But at this stage, we are all eager to contest and participate in the Games," Coffa said. When asked about sending security experts prior to Games, he said no decision has been taken as of now.

"We will take advice from the Australian government and we will have our own intelligence keeping us informed. At this stage, we have made no extraordinary provision but we will continue being alert," said Coffa.

When asked about his assessment of Delhi's preparedness, he said he hopes to see a successful organisation of the Games.

"We were in India to have formal a meeting with the Organising committee and inspect the progress first hand. Construction of the venues was running slightly behind schedule but confidence is high that the timelines for delivery of most venues will be met," said the board member of 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth games.
