Australian Commonwealth Games Association chief executive Perry Crosswhite has played down security concerns for 2010 Delhi Games.

Crosswhite, who led a delegation to India to take stock of security situation in the country, gave thumbs up to India's preparation for the quadrennial extravaganza and said that officials have assured them safety of athletes would be of paramount importance.

"We came away with a much better feeling than we had before and the feeling they're right on top of the security planning right now," said Crosswhite, who was told more than 8,000 new policemen have been hired to form the backbone of security at the event.

"All of the CGAs (Commonwealth Games Associations) have this at the top of their priority list - that the security will be at a level that would be expected," he told Australian Associated Press (AAP).

However, Crosswhite said Australia would also do its own reconnaissance and plan extra security arrangements for its athletes.

Australia is expected to send their largest ever Commonwealth Games contingent, comprising of more than 425 athletes and 175 officials, to Delhi.

Crosswhite's revelation comes as a welcome news after the Australian tennis team had recently pulled out from a Davis Cup tie in Chennai earlier this month citing security concerns.
