Cavendish wins 13th stage
British cyclist Mark Cavendish claimed a win in the 13th stage of the Giro d'Italia.
Cavendish had identified the stage as one that he could win but things looked to be going against him when he came off his bike after just 20km of racing. After showing some initial anger he remounted and continued. It is the fourth stage that the Briton has won as he emerged from a sprint finish, yet again, to claim the victory.
On the first day of the tour the Team Columbia-Highroad racer became the first English rider to win a stage on the tour and has since added victory in three further stages to his tally.
Cavendish perfectly timed his sprint to come from behind and cross the line clear of Italian Alessandro Petacchi who finished second.
After racing 176km through Tuscany, Milram rider Björn Schroeder had broken away into an early lead and it was only in the final 10km that he lost his position at the front of the pack.
Despite the win for Cavendish there was no change in the overall standing with Russian Denis Menchov still leading second-placed Danilo Di Luca by 34 seconds.
