Bolt cruises to Toronto win

Olympic champion Usain Bolt held off the challenge of two Americans to win the 100 metres at the Festival of Excellence in Toronto.

The Jamaican finished ahead of Shawn Crawford and Ivory Williams to win the event in at Varsity Stadium in 10 seconds dead.

Crawford finished second in 10.25secs with Williams third after crossing the line in 10.28secs on what turned out to be a rainy night. Bolt's compatriot Marvin Anderson was disqualified for a false start.

"I think I should have done a little bit better but for me, it was all right," Bolt said afterwards.

"I went through it injury free so that's a good thing."

The crowd were initially bewildered when the electronic clock showed 9.25secs - vastly superior to his world record of 9.69 which won him the gold medal in Beijing last summer.

But it quickly corrected itself to calm down the excited sell-out crowd of 6,500 spectators at the city's Varsity Centre.

Bolt was competing for the first time since setting a world 150m best of 14.35secs in Manchester on May 17, when he passed through the 100m point in 9.91secs.

However, the 22-year-old - running into a 0.09metres-per-second headwind - could not match that speed on Thursday, and admitted the rain and two false starts had caused problems.

"(It) threw me off a little bit, but not much. I've been there before," he said.

"This is a part of the game. Some day you have a good day, some day you have a bad day. I guess I'll put this down as a bad day for me."

Bolt will now return to Europe for his next outing, again over 100m, at the Ostrava Super Grand Prix next Wednesday.
