Bolt Czechs into Europe

Bolt Czechs into Europe

Usain Bolt will begin his European track season tomorrow by competing over 100 metres at the Golden Spike meeting in Ostrava.

Bolt is no stranger to the Czech Republic venue and thrilled the stadium last June with a victory over 200m, his favourite event, in a time of 19.83seconds.

Since then the 22-year-old Jamaican has produced a string of exhilarating performances, including his Olympic 100m and 200m double in Beijing.

He will contest the shorter distance tomorrow in Ostrava, where he will be hoping the conditions are more favourable than at the rainswept Toronto meeting last week, where he was slowed to a time of 10.00secs.

Should that be the case, and given the fact the Ostrava track is fast, he could challenge the meeting record of 9.85sec, which Jamaican compatriot Asafa Powell set four years ago.

Meeting organisers have also offered a bonus of US dollars 100,000 should Bolt break his world record of 9.69sec, which won him the gold medal in Beijing.

Marcus Brunson of the United States and Qatar's Asian record holder Samuel Francis, both sub-10 second performers, provide the opposition.

Dayron Robles, who set a new 110m hurdles world record with a time of 12.87sec at the meeting 12 months ago, is also back in action at the venue after a late start to the season.

The Cuban has had only one outing so far, in Thessaloniki last week, and will be under pressure from American Dexter Faulk, who won last Sunday's IAAF Golden League title in Berlin with a time of 13.18sec.

Czech Olympic javelin champion and world record holder Barbora Spotakova will also be in action along with Brimin Kipruto, the 3000m steeplechase gold medallist in Beijing.

Britain's Jenny Meadows will have a testing 800m outing against Russia's Gulnara Samitova-Galkina and Ukrainian Tetyana Petlyuk.

Meadows will represent the Aviva GB team at this weekend's European Team Championships.
