Ashley Jackson makes history
Beijing Olympian Ashley Jackson has been named World Hockey Young Player of the Year - the first Englishman to win the award.
The Kent-born 22-year-old has become a key part of the national squad since making his international debut in November 2006.
Jackson, a former East Grinstead midfielder who now plays for Dutch side HGC, won the European Championships with England this summer and was a member of the side that finished bottom in the elite-level six-nation Champions Trophy in Melbourne earlier today.
"This award is not about being voted for by the people watching the game, it's about being recognised for playing good hockey by team-mates and other players," said Jackson.
England coach Jason Lee added: "This year has been a breakout one for Ashley.
"He's a key ingredient in our midfield and gives us a lot of drive going forward. He's got so much potential and will only get better."
