Indian women grapplers shine

Indian women grapplers bagged two bronze medals on Day 3 of the Senior Asian Wrestling Championship at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Sports Complex on Friday.

Arjuna Awardee Alka Tomar beat Miruert Dynbayeva of Kazakhstan 3-3, 2-1 in the 59 kilogram Freestyle category. Alka had beaten the same opponent in the 2009 Asian Championship in Pattaya.

Another Arjuna Award winner Suman Kundu got the better of Olga Kalinina of Kazakhstan in the 63 kilogram category to secure the second bronze for India. This was Suman's first medal in Senior Asian Wrestling Championship.

As many as six Indians were in contention for the bronze medal in their respective categories. Nirmala Devi lost her Repechage round against Sim-Hyang So of People's Republic of Korea in the 48 kilogram category, while in the 51 kilogram category Babita Kumari lost her Repechage bout to Japan's Hiromi Sakurai.

Geetika Jakhar was also beaten at the same stage by her Chinese opponent Chen Ying to lose out on a bronze in the 67 kilogram category. Anmol, in bronze medal contention in the 72 kilogram category, lost her bout to Inoue Yoshiko of Japan.
