Saina: Success comes with a price-tag
Basking in the glory of back to back Super Series triumphs, shuttle queen Saina Nehwal was confidence personified - a trait that has been a trademark through her career.
Speaking to Himanshu Shekhar of espnstar.com, Saina promised to bring more laurels to her country. Excerpts:
Himanshu Shekhar: Congratulations Saina for the laurels that you have brought to India. It has been a dream run for you this year.
Saina Nehwal: It is indeed a great feeling. It's nice to see more and more people getting interested in badminton. The game has given me everything. It has been my life, my passion and everything. It is still early days for me and I hope to make it even bigger.
HS: You are India's youngest ever captain who will lead the country in the World Championship at Paris? Do you think this is a bit too early and will add extra pressure?
SN: The captaincy was bit of a surprise. But I think with Gopi Sir around I will have to focus on my game. With his expertise and experience, do I need to bother for anything else? (Smiles).
HS: After your successes, there's a huge amount of interest shown by media and the corporate world. How do you see this latest change?
SN: It's a welcome change. It's a fact that once you win and are on road to success, people do acknowledge you. Badminton needs encouragement and things are looking better. I believe infrastructural development needs money and victory at the world forum is just the right crowd puller.
HS: Saina, you have been a very soft spoken and a shy natured girl. Does this extra media attention and accolades add any kind of pressure? Do you miss your privacy?
SN: (Smiles...) This is for you to see. Sometimes I miss my privacy. But yes, like everything in this world, success also has its own price. There are more and more people watching you...it adds extra pressure. But, Gopi Sir ensures that things don't go out of hand. Sometimes...I enjoy this and feel good about it. The most rewarding one is the joy I can see in my father's eye... You know it's most satisfying.
HS: Now that you have jumped to world number two, what is your next target?
SN: I am not worried about rankings, the immediate challenge you all know is the World Championship in Paris. We have a very good team and hopefully we will do well. God has been very kind and I am enjoying it at the moment.
HS: Very often there is this talk about the Chinese challenge and their potential skills, isn't it irritating?
SN: I am used to these questions. I know that China have very good badminton players and has been a super power in the sport, but I have beaten them in the past and not worried about opponents and their nationality. For any athlete it is important that he/she focuses on his/her game and build on his/her strength and minimise the weaknesses.
HS: Recently you said that you are the Rodger Federer of Indian badminton?
SN: (Smiles...) He is my long-standing idol. I wish I can emulate his success on the badminton court. His discipline and his attitude are things which one can admire endlessly.
HS: What will you cherish the most? No. 1 world ranking or an Olympic gold?
SN: Of course an Olympic Gold. It's a dream that I'm living with day in and day out.
