"Our win will bring Haitians joy!"
Haiti coach Pierre Sonche says his side's march to the boys football final has brought joy to a nation still suffering.
"We can't give money to our people back in Haiti, but at least I know they are very happy with this result and our campaign here in Singapore," Sonche said after his team's 2-0 win over Singapore.
Sonche's team face a daunting task in the final, however, as Bolivia, who beat Montenegro in the other semifinal, trounced Haiti 9-0 in the group stage.
Singapore captain Jeffrey Lightfoot was dejected after the match. "I'm not very satisfied with our performance," he said. "We didn't play so well tonight. I'm quite disappointed."
Lightfoot's sentiments were echoed by Singapore assistant coach Abdullah Noor. "They were much hungrier than us," he said. "We didn't convert our chances, but credit to these boys. They are 15 years old and they have tried and tried, but that is football. You make one mistake and they punish you."
Earlier on Sunday at the Jalan Besar Stadium, Bolivia kept up their perfect record. The scores were level at 1-1 at the half-time break but the South Americans scored two unanswered goals in the second half to register a 3-1 win, despite the heroic efforts of Montenegro goalkeeper Marko Kordic, who had kept his team in the contest with a string of impressive saves.
Rodrigo Mejido (BOL), the tournament's top scorer with five goals, believes his side are peaking at the right time. "We are playing better and better each day," Mejido said. "It was difficult at the beginning of the tournament because we were tired from the trip but we are improving all the time. We fear no team in this competition and we are going to be up for the challenge to play in the final. We have secured the silver medal, but we just want to win gold now."
Montenegro captain Nebojsa Kosovic had his own explanation on why his side lost out. "Bolivia played with more heart today," he said. "We needed to play with our whole heart, not just five or six players, but all 11 must play like this."
Singapore and Montenegro, who met in the group stage with the Young Lions winning 3-2, will meet in the bronze medal match on Wednesday, 25 August at 18.00 at the Jalan Besar Stadium. That will be followed by the gold medal match between Bolivia and Haiti, at 20:45.
