Skipper Kumar Sangakkara and Tharanga Paranavitana took a guarded approach after Sri Lanka lost an early wicket in Tillakaratne Dilshan.

Tillakaratne Dilshan tried to tuck the first delivery off Zaheer Khan away from his pads but the ball lobbed up and down to Pragyan Ohja's throat.

Earlier, Sri Lanka wrapped up the Indian innings for 642 after Rahul Dravid completed back-to-back centuries on the second day of the second Test in Kanpur.

VVS Laxman and Yuvraj Singh hit a half-century each as India easily crossed the 600-run mark and Lanka's bowlers continued to toil on the second day.

VVS Laxman lost his wicket to Rangana Herath, with Dilshan taking an easy catch at mid-off.

Indian skipper MS Dhoni failed to add much to his side's score as Herath claimed his second successive wicket in him.

Harbhajan Singh became Herath's third victim and lost his wicket in almost a similar fashion.

Ajantha Mendis claimed the eighth Indian wicket in Yuvraj Singh as the hosts kept losing wickets at regularl intervals. Sangakkara took a nice catch at mid-wicket to dismiss Yuvraj. Herath claimed the penultimate one in Zaheer Khan and the last one in Sreesanth.

All the action as it unfolded

Rahul Dravid scored a superb 144, his 28th Test century and dominated partnerships with Sachin Tendulkar and Laxman, but departed in unfortunate circumstances as Sri Lanka enjoyed some success.

India, however, were firmly in the driving seat, having reached 535 for four at the lunch interval and with Yuvraj Singh batting on 13 alongside Laxman.

Tendulkar, 20 at the start of play, had played out the first half hour cautiously and survived a reprieve on 30 when Tillakaratne Dilshan grassed a catch at mid-wicket as the batsman attempted a lazy drive off Ajantha Mendis.

The master batsman then lofted Mendis for a six in the next over and looked to assert his authority by walking out to cart the bowler over the top, but instead hit straight to Thilan Samaraweera at deep mid-off.

His dismissal inside the first hour ended a partnership for the third wicket, which yielded 94, but there was no respite for the visitors.

Dravid, 85 at the start of the day and who had scored 177 in the first innings of the Ahmedabad Test, had begun the day with an inside-edged boundary which flew perilously close to leg stump.

It was the only false stroke from Dravid, the batsman thereafter going from strength to strength and reaching his century with a straight drive past fast bowler Chanaka Welegedara.

The middle-order batsman, who went past Allan Border's mark of 11,174 runs in Test cricket, fell just before lunch when left-arm spinner Herath palmed a shot from Laxman onto the stumps at the non-striker's end and caught Dravid backing up too far.

Dravid had added 47 with Laxman, the latter holding firm as India finished another session in the ascendancy.
