Netminder Ryan Miller was the star man for Buffalo Sabres as they beat Washington Capitals 3-0 in the NHL.

Steve Montador, Nathan Gerbe and Henrik Tallinder scored the goals but Miller took the plaudits with 35 saves.

He preserved his fourth shut-out of the season with stunning saves from Brendan Morrison and Nicklas Backstrom in the final period.

Los Angeles Kings won a topsy-turvy clash with San Jose Sharks 5-4 thanks to Dustin Brown's decisive goal in overtime.

Teddy Purcell's opener was overhauled by Joe Pavelski and Patrick Marleau, but Jarrett Stoll, Anze Kopitar and Drew Doughty put the Kings 4-2 up before Dan Boyle and Manny Malhotra levelled - only for Brown to seal victory for his side.

Dustin Byfuglien's overtime strike gave Chicago Blackhawks a 2-1 win over New York Rangers. Jonathan Toews' power-play strike had earlier brought the Hawks level after Chris Higgins' opener.

Andy Greene scored twice as New Jersey Devils beat Carolina Hurricanes, but Martin Brodeur was made to wait to beat the league's all-time shut-out record.

Patrik Elias opened the scoring before Greene extended the Devils' lead to 3-0 early in the second period, but Brandon Sutter and Tuomo Ruutu brought Carolina back within a single goal before Rob Niedermayer made the result safe in the final period.

Olli Jokinen, Nigel Dawes and Rene Bourque fired Calgary Flames to a 3-1 win over Atlanta Thrashers, for whom Colby Armstrong grabbed a consolation goal.

That result saw the Flames take full advantage of North-West Division rivals Colorado Avalanches' 1-0 defeat to Minnesota Wild. Antti Miettinen scored the only goal as Niklas Backstrom made 23 saves.

Edmonton Oilers won 3-2 at Tampa Bay with goals from Zack Stortini, Tom Gilbert and Dustin Penner. Martin St. Louis and Victor Hedman scored for the Lightning.

Elsewhere, Columbus Blue Jackets beat Florida Panthers 3-0, St Louis Blues edged Detroit Red Wings 1-0 and New York Islanders lost 3-2 at Toronto Maple Leafs.
