Mancini backs City's Adebayor

Mancini backs City's Adebayor

Roberto Mancini feels Emmanuel Adebayor must try and forget the horror he experienced in Angola.

Adebayor scored his first goal since the shocking day when three of Togo's backroom team, including their driver, were killed when gunmen opened fire on the team bus prior to the African Nations Cup.

Almost unbelievably, Togo have been expelled from the next two tournaments for withdrawing from this one, a ruling Adebayor has pledged to fight.

Mancini cannot even begin to understand how the £25million Manchester City striker must feel. But, after putting City on their way to a 2-0 win over crisis club Portsmouth, he knows the best way of dealing with the issue is to blank it out of his mind.

"It was an incredible situation," said the City chief.

"I hope and think he forgets about the situation. He just needs to think about himself and his family because he is very lucky."

Adebayor's effort was followed up by one from Vincent Kompany as City moved to within a point of fourth spot - with two games in hand - despite being well below their best.

The Blues subsequently lost Kompany to a groin problem that might consign the Belgium international to an extended period on the sidelines.

Still Mancini was not expecting any major developments from the world's richest club on the final day of the transfer window, other than a move for Parma's Kenyan midfielder McDonald Mariga.

However, it did subsequently emerge City had made a renewed effort to sign Adam Johnson from Middlesbrough, a transfer if it goes through as expected, will set the Eastlands outfit back around £7million.
