Carrick backs Rio England captaincy

Michael Carrick has backed the appointment of Rio Ferdinand as the new England captain and saying he will be a success for the country.

Ferdinand was promoted by England coach Fabio Capello from vice-captain to captain of the England team after John Terry's alleged extra-martial affairs.

The ex-West Ham and Leeds defender will lead England at the World Cup finals in South Africa.

Fellow Manchester United teammate Carrick feels Ferdinand has the makings of a successful captain.

Carrick, 28, said: "Rio's a terrific leader and a terrific captain. He's a world-class player.

"He's done it in the Champions League final and won it, so it won't faze him in that respect.

"Rio has the respect of the players and that's an important thing so I'm sure he'll be successful.

"Once you're on the pitch you've all got to lead in some way so I don't think it will affect things too much."
