MLB: Joyce seals Rays win

Matt Joyce's three-run homer gave the Tampa Bay Rays a 3-2 win over the New York Yankees.

The Yankees led for most of the game through Nick Swisher's two-run shot in the first inning, but they were the only runs Rays starter Wade Davis conceded and Joyce provided the offence in the sixth.

Alex Rodriguez, still stranded on 599 career homers, went hitless.

The Detroit Tigers held off a furious ninth-inning rally from the Boston Red Sox to win 6-5 at Fenway.

Holding a 6-1 lead, closer Jose Valverde contrived to concede a grand slam to David Ortiz after walking the bases loaded, then allowed runners on first and second, before finally striking out Mike Cameron to end the inning.

Lucas Harrell was a winner on his Major League debut as the Chicago White Sox beat the Oakland Athletics 6-1.

Harrell allowed one earned run on four hits and five walks as the White Sox extended their home winning streak to 12.

Matt Capps picked up the save on his debut for his new team as the Minnesota Twins beat the Seattle Mariners 5-3.

Erick Aybar and Juan Rivera both homered off Tommy Huntyer in the second as the Los Angeles Angels beat the Texas Rangers 9-7.

The Philadelphia Phillies saw their eight-game winning streak snapped in emphatic fashion as Roy Oswalt conceded five runs, four earned, in six innings on his debut in an 8-1 defeat by the Washington Nationals.

That allowed the Atlanta Braves to stretch their lead in the National League East to 3 1/2 games as they beat the Cincinnati Reds 6-4 thanks to Jason Heyward's two-run double in the 10th.

Brendan Ryan's RBI single in the 10th gave the St Louis Cardinals a 1-0 win in the 10th inning after a classic pitching duel.

The Florida Marlins got home runs from Cody Ross and Gaby Sanchez as they beat the San Diego Padres 4-2.

The Colorado Rockies got 12 runs in the eighth inning, helped by 11 consecutive hits, as they destroyed the Chicago Cubs 17-2.

JA Happ's six scoreless innings gave him a win on his first start for the Houston Astros, 5-0 against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Elsewhere, Alex Gordon's ninth-inning three-run homer gave the Kansas City Royals a 7-5 win over the Baltimore Orioles, David Wright homered twice as the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the New York Mets 9-6, while the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Cleveland Indians 8-1 and the San Francisco Giants were 6-5 winners over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
