Castrogiovanni looks for fine finish

Italy prop Martin Castrogiovanni aims to end a successful week on a high note when the Azzurri face unbeaten France on Sunday.

The Leicester Tigers player provided much of the inspiration for his team in last weekend's 35-11 triumph over London Irish in the Guinness Premiership.

Castrogiovanni scored a try on an interception to help Leicester open a six-point gap at the top of the standings and the 28-year-old was named man of the match.

"It's not often that in my position you score a try," said Castrogiovanni. "I am enjoying that achievement.

"I am going through a great time and I hope I can continue to do well.

"I always try to give my best on the pitch regardless of how I feel."

But Castrogiovanni has now turned his attention back to Italy.

The Azzurri go into their fourth RBS 6 Nations match looking to build on last month's 16-12 triumph over Scotland - their first success in the tournament since March 2008.

The French will present a tremendous challenge for Italy at the Stade de France, but Castrogiovanni is confident his team will keep up the good form shown against England and Scotland in Rome last month.

The Azzurri lost 17-12 to England in Rome before prevailing against the Scots.

"We are focusing on our strengths and we will try to bring home the game," said Castrogiovanni.

"Our group is hungry for victories and I think we proved that against Scotland.

"There are games that are easier and others that are more difficult but the mentality of Italy is the right one."

France beat Wales 26-20 last time out to maintain their perfect record in the competition and underline their status as the tournament favourites.

"France is the best team in Europe," he said.

"Against them, we have to play a perfect game in defence.

"We cannot leave any spaces because France, when playing with the ball in hand, are the best in the world.

"But as always, everything will begin from our performance in the scrum."

Italy lost 50-8 to France in Rome last year, conceding seven tries.

The Azzurri have never beaten Les Bleus in the Six Nations but despite Marc Lievremont's side having few weaknesses, Castrogiovanni believes Italy can make life difficult for them.

"We have to stop them from playing their game," he said.

"We have to put pressure on them and try to make them uncomfortable."

For the third game in a row, Italy coach Nick Mallett has confirmed the same starting XV.
