Deans wants referee meeting

Wallabies coach Robbie Deans hopes a pre-match meeting with referee Bryce Lawrence can set the tune of the match against NZ.

He is hoping to avoid a repeat of the Tri Nations opener against New Zealand, when his side struggled to stay legal.

The Australians were frequently penalised by South African referee Craig Joubert at crucial stages of the 22-16 loss to the Kiwis at Eden Park, prompting a desperate Deans to arrange a chat with Lawrence ahead of the Cape Town Test on August 8.

"It's an area that we've got to master because it just makes your life so much harder when you get decisions that impact on the flow of the game and impact on possession - particularly in good field positions, it makes it difficult," Deans said.

"So we've got to master the piece that we own of that and obviously we'll communicate with the referees in advance to hopefully become aware of any areas that they perceive as issues in advance or any preconceived ideas they have.

"And hopefully we'll get closer to zero penalties than the other way."

While Deans was clearly frustrated by some of the rulings at Eden Park - particularly at set-piece time with tighthead prop Al Baxter conceding three penalties for collapsing the scrum - he insists the onus is on his players to fix the problem.

"There will always be the elements that you can't control and there'll always be the suggestion that things go against you," he said.

"But I think at the end of any game you can look at decisions that go both ways and you can suggest that some of them were game-defining moments.

"It's easier with the benefit of hindsight, we've got to master it in real time and that's what we're working at."

Meanwhile, Deans heaped praise on the Springboks following their impressive 28-19 victory over the All Blacks in Bloemfontein.

"They're a very good side and they've been that for a while and they just exude that belief," he said.

"They've got all the elements and that first 30 minutes was pretty impressive, the All Blacks did well to keep themselves in the game."

The coach emphasised the need to meet the physical challenge head on after the Springboks dominated the All Blacks at the all-important breakdown area on Sunday.

"If you don't accept the physical challenge there won't be a lot to feed off, so that's one area where we're going to have to step up otherwise it doesn't matter what plans you have in mind, they won't come to much," he said.

The Springboks face another torrid encounter with the Kiwis in Durban this weekend before taking on the Wallabies, but Deans does not believe the heavy workload will diminish the Springboks' powers.

"It's probably more of an advantage to them than it is to us but it's still a game we're looking forward to," he said.

In injury news, flanker Richard Brown is expected to be named in the 24-man touring party announced on Wednesday despite again sitting out training with a foot injury.

Rocky Elsom (knee) will not be considered for selection to face the Springboks but Deans is hopeful the world-class flanker is in line for a return against the Kiwis in Sydney on August 22.
