Will Genia commits to AFU
Scrum-half Will Genia has re-signed with the Australian Rugby Union and the Reds for a further two years.
Injury cut Genia's 2009 Super 14 season short, but he showed enough form before that to be selected in Robbie Deans' Wallabies side for the Tri-Nations series.
The 21-year-old made his Test debut as a substitute against New Zealand in the opening Bledisloe Cup match and has since made a further five appearances, including the last two as the starting number nine.
"It's been a rapid rise for me this year but I certainly haven't taken any of it for granted," Genia said.
"I have tried to make the most of all opportunities I've received at training or on game day, and I've enjoyed every moment.
"I had no hesitation in re-signing with Australian Rugby and Queensland, and hopefully I'll be more involved with the Wallabies in the future."
Genia departs with the rest of the Wallabies on Friday for the end-of-season spring tour in Europe, which kicks off with a match against the All Blacks in Japan on October 31.
"I'm really excited about this upcoming tour - the challenge of playing a Bledisloe Cup match in Japan and then all four Home Unions in the UK and Ireland," Genia said.
"From that perspective, it will not be a Grand Slam tour unless we win all four Tests, so we need to approach them one at a time and not get ahead of ourselves."
Born in Papua New Guinea, Genia was plucked from obscurity and made his Super 14 debut in 2007, having never played an open grade game of rugby.
He has impressed ever since to become a crucial member of the Reds team and he will always be grateful for getting that opportunity.
"I grew up in Queensland watching the Reds, so to have had the opportunity and the honour to play for them was definitely exciting," he said.
"I'm very passionate about playing for Queensland and hopefully I will for a long time to come.
"They were the ones who gave me my first opportunity, who gave me a real chance of playing Super 14. I'm grateful for that and always will be."
