Smith closer to Wallabies dream
Brumbies centre Tyrone Smith has moved a step closer to completing a lifelong ambition and playing with brother George for the Wallabies.
Tyrone joined the touring side for breakfast at their Tokyo hotel on Wednesday following a surprise call-up to replace injured back Rob Horne.
The tackle-breaking centre will watch Saturday's Bledisloe Cup clash against New Zealand from the stands before embarking on the Wallabies' first Grand Slam tour in 25 years.
Smith has now set his sights on joining big brother George, a 105-Test veteran, in the green and gold after playing with him at club (Manly) and provincial (Brumbies) level.
"It's always really good playing next to George but this is now at a higher level," Tyrone said.
"Hopefully I get the chance to play alongside him at some stage.
"You always dream of playing for your country and to do it with George would be fantastic."
The call from Australian team management came out of the blue, Smith admitting his focus was solely on beginning preparations for the 2010 Super 14 season.
"I'm just recently back from my honeymoon - we went to New York, Las Vegas and Hawaii - and I was winding down from that and getting ready to get back into pre-season training," he said.
"The call was completely unexpected.
"I was very surprised but it's something I've been waiting for and I'm really glad to be going over there.
"I'm really looking forward to taking my opportunity at this level."
Smith is likely to play in Australia's tour match against Gloucester on Thursday week but is at long odds to force his way into Test calculations.
But the 26-year-old is just grateful for the opportunity.
"I haven't been informed about my role but I'm looking forward to going over there and getting myself somewhere in the mix," he said.
"To get any game will be a bonus. I'm just thrilled to be part of the set-up."
