Improved display pleases Moody

England captain Lewis Moody was proud of his team as they made France work hard to clinch the Grand Slam at the Stade de France.

The French eventually prevailed 12-10 to finish their RBS 6 Nations campaign with a perfect winning record.

But England ran them close, and Moody, who stepped in for the injured Steve Borthwick, was delighted with the effort if not the result.

England felt they were given a raw deal by the match officials, being penalised frequently in the scrum.

After a disappointing campaign, Moody said of the display: "It was certainly improved but it's so frustrating.

"It was a good performance and we should just have finished it off.

"Fair play to France though, they've been the most consistent team in the Six Nations and they're probably deserved winners of this championship, but I'm proud of the boys today. They went out there and played their socks off, they worked hard.

"I think the penalty count probably cost us. We couldn't ask more of ourselves and it's just bitterly frustrating."

Speaking on BBC1, Moody added: "It was a full squad effort but we just missed it."

Asked about his own emotions at leading the team out in Paris, Moody said: "It was one of the proudest moments of my life without a doubt.

"It was a bizarre feeling coming out in front of all these people and I suppose that makes it even harder when you lose.

"I was so proud of the guys today, just frustrated as always."
