Yuki keen to play on men’s circuit

Sportscenter’s Wrik Ganguly spoke to India's first Australian Open boys' singles champion Yuki Bhambri.

Q. First of all congratulations on the beautiful feat. How does it feel?

A. It is an awesome and a proud moment for me and I am absolutely thrilled and I want to thank everybody who supported me throughout.

Q. How does it feel to be at the pinnacle of the tennis world?

A. It definitely feels great. I think I have given myself a perfect gift by winning the Grand Slam and achieving the number one ranking.

Q. Does the plan change that you still want to play more juniors or you want to take on the seniors?

A. Well, the seniors is definitely the place I am going for. That is my aim. The senior circuit is definitely up my mind and it is going to be a lot more men's tournaments that I am going to play.

Q. What we have learnt is that you were quite nervous before the first match at the Australian Open. Is it true?

A. Yes, I was pretty nervous before the first match but that definitely lifted me and that helped me a lot. I had to dig really hard for that match but that match helped me a lot and gave a lot of confidence.

Q. Was there butterflies in your stomach because that was the last glitch?

A. In the beginning, yes a little bit. I was tired but so was he and I got the early lead and that made the difference.

Q. How do you compare the orange bowl win and the Grand Slam? Obviously the Grand Slam had its own importance but is the orange bowl more competitive than the Australian Open?

A. I don't think so. The Grand Slam are definitely the most competitive but they are two different tournaments and they both hold their place.

Q. Before the finals how did things shape up? When did you sleep, what were the tips you got from the coach?

A. I was really excited and nervous playing the finals. I really wanted to enjoy that moment because it's not everyday that you play in the finals here at Rod Laver Arena. It was one of my best matches that I have played. I think I really played well on that day.

Q. Apart from your Mom, coach and everybody else there was somebody else who was exchanging mails with you. Who was there, who was giving you inspiration throughout? Do you want to mention that person here?

A. Deepti aunty has really been a great support. She has really helped me a lot. She has asked me to put my head into the game. She has really been humble and I would like to thank her on this opportunity.

Q. What was the special inspiration before the finals?

A. Well! she told me to enjoy myself because as I said you don't get to play a grand slam final everyday on such a big stage.

Q. So what's next for Yuki?

A. Well, hopefully I would like to start playing more on the men's circuit and start doing well there as well.

Q. Well, I also learnt that you got the opportunity to hit for Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal but it never took place. How does it work out?

A. I think it was on consecutive days. Both the times I was doing interviews in the locker and I was told I could get a chance to hit with them. Both the times I rushed to the court but it was so hot that you couldn't really get out there.

Q. Talking about the hit on the surface out there, all the main matches were shifted to the Rod Laver Arena but you were still forced to play on the outside court. Was it tough?

A. It was always tough. The scheduling was all messes up for you. You have to start a match at 10 and it would go till four in the evening, but I think I am glad I could cope up with it.

Q. Did you expect so much of media frenzy, so many people running behind you at the airport before landing?

A. No, definitely not.

Q. Not even the ‘dhols' over there?

A. No

Q. Ok final question -- Valentines Day is coming and you are the idol of India. What's in store for the day?

A. Nothing yet.
