Wawrinka to play in India's ATP event

Swiss star Stanislas Wawrinka has become the latest high profile player to have confirmed his participation in the Aircel Chennai Open.

Wawrinka joins defending champion Marin Cilic and Robin Soderling in India's only ATP event, scheduled for January 4-10.

Wawrinka, the Olympic Gold Medal winner along with Roger Federer said, "I expect Aircel Chennai Open to be a fascinating hard-court contest between some known, seeded players and upcoming talents."

India has seen an upsurge of tennis talent recently.

Indian fans would be backing the local players and it is a good opportunity for them to showcase their skills against the high seeded players of the world," added the world number 21.

Croatia's Cilic, ranked 13th in the world, had last year beaten local favourite Somdev Devvarman to lift the title.

"The confirmation from top seeded players such as Marin Cilic and Stanislas Wawrinka will further enhance the popularity and recognition of the tournament amongst tennis fans," M A Alagappan, President, Tamil Nadu Tennis Association (TNTA), said.

"We are glad that year after year this tournament is extending its reach to a wider audience and becoming the most sought after event for players and fans alike," he added.
