Amritraj: Bright future for Somdev

Former Indian Davis Cup captain Vijay Amritraj said Somdev Devvarman had a bright future in the ATP tour and other tournaments in 2009.

Amritraj, who was at the Nungambakkam Tennis Stadium to watch his son Prakash practising ahead of the Aircel Chennai Open qualifying events from January 2, said the field in the tournament is open.

"It is no different this time. Somdev has a wonderful chance (to win). I had watched him in the US Open after he lost the final here early 2009. Now he has improved a lot in his game, serving well and his baseline game is also effective," Amritraj said.

Asked about the non-issuance of wild card to Prakash, he said it was not disappointing.

"Som and Rohan (Bopanna) deserved wildcards and the Chennai Open required Moya's comeback," he said, adding "Prakash will grind it out in the qualifier".

On the citizenship issue of Prakash, Amritraj hoped that the union government would relax relevant rules soon.

"Prakash has played well for the country. I hope he will come back to don India colours again," he said.
