Yuki: ATP singles win isn’t far away

Yuki: ATP singles win isn’t far away

Yuki Bhambri, who teamed up with former No.1 Carlos Moya for his first win on the ATP World Tour feels his maiden singles victory too isn’t far away.

Excerpts from the Delhi boy's exclusive chat with espnstar.com, minutes after his maiden triumph.

Bhagya Ayyavoo: Yuki, congratulations on your first win on the ATP tour? How was the experience?

Yuki Bhambri: It was certainly exciting playing with Moya. I had fun on the court. My first successful venture on the ATP circuit has been good.

BA: How was it to share the center court with Moya?

YB: It was definitely very special playing with such a great player. Despite being just a singles player throughout his career, he carried himself forward exceeding well in the doubles. He had the touch at the net as well. It was great playing with him.

BA: For your first main draw match this season, you displayed great confidence in your shots. What was the reason behind it?

YB: I think we had a good start and that helped us. We broke them in the very first game and when Carlos held serve we had a good lead. So, I played a bit more freely and went for my shots. As the match went on, I felt a lot more comfortable with the crowd cheering us on.

BA: What was Moya telling you between points?

YB: Nothing. We were just chatting between points, encouraging each other and talking to each other.

BA: Did you ever expect your first win on ATP tour to come in doubles and not singles?

YB: When you're growing up, your goal is to do well in singles. You always dream of doing well there. But, I am just happy that I have got a win and I have made a mark for myself in doubles. I think singles isn't far away.

BA: Now that you have cleared the first hurdle, have you set yourself any target?

YB: At this stage, we should go match by match. We have a match tomorrow. We will be playing the second seeds. It's going to be tough. They have had a lot of success as a pair last season. So, it will be a lot tougher than today. We have to work hard to hold our serves and take most of the opportunities we get.
