She conceded the first set of her match against Anna-Lena Groenefeld before hitting back to eventually win 5-7 6-3 6-4.

Elsewhere in the women's draw, ninth seed Caroline Wozniacki, from Denmark, thrashed Timea Bacsinszky 6-1 6-1 to progress.

However, Carla Suarez Navarro, the 29th seed, was sent crashing 6-3 6-1 by American Alexa Glatch, while China's Shuai Peng edged through 6-3 3-6 6-4 against Olga Govortsova.

Michael Berrer, Todd Widom and Daniel Koellerer were early winners in the men's tournament.

Britain's world number four Andy Murray will begin his singles campaign tomorrow but he made a victorious return from a virus today alongside doubles partner Ross Hutchins, as they defeated Nicolas Kiefer and Czech Tomas Berdych 6-4 0-6 10-7 in a champions tie-break.

In other matches in the men's draw, world number one Rafael Nadal will meet German qualifier Michael Berrer after he beat African wild card Kevin Anderson 6-3 6-3, while defending champion Novak Djokovic will play Martin Vassallo Arguello as he downed South African Rik De Voest 7-5 7-6 (7/3).

Elsewhere 49th-ranked Sam Querrey thwarted Argentina's Guillermo Canas 7-6 (7/2) 6-2 in one hour and 21 minutes.

In the women's draw world number two Dinara Safina made her way into the third round with victory over Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova 7-6 (10/8) 6-2.

She will face 28th-seeded Peng Shuai who advanced earlier in the day.

Fourth-seeded Vera Zvonareva was also in action, beating Chan Yung-Jan of Taiwan 6-2 6-2, while eighth-seeded Victoria Azarenka of Belarus rallied for a 4-6 7-5 6-3 victory over Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan.
