Murray progresses in Cali

Andy Murray advanced to the third round of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells with a hard-fought victory over Albert Montanes.

Murray battled to a 7-5 6-3 win in his first singles match since being forced to withdraw before his quarter-final with Richard Gasquet in Dubai last month due to a virus.

The British number one had partnered Ross Hutchins to victory in the doubles yesterday and was pleased to come through another testing clash in the hot conditions.

"I feel okay, I knew it was going to be a tough match," Murray told Sky Sports Xtra.

"He's a tough player, he makes a lot of balls and plays a lot closer to the baseline on hard courts than I've seen before on clay.

"I'm pretty happy with the way I came back after going a break down in the first set."

Tommy Robredo, the 15th seed, also made serene progress to round three with a routine 6-1 6-4 win over Igor Kunitsyn, while Igor Andreev beat talented youngster Ernests Gulbis 6-4 6-4.

In the women's tournament, seventh seed Agnieszka Radwanska was pushed all the way by Australia's Sam Stosur before emerging victorious 3-6 6-3 7-5.

Fellow seeds Agnes Szavay (22) and Karin Knapp (27) also progressed with respective wins over Edina Gallovits and Sara Errani - the latter match being curtailed by Errani's retirement.

Nuria Llagostera Vives defeated Dominika Cibulkova 7-6 6-0.

In other matches in the men's draw, world number one Rafael Nadal will meet German qualifier Michael Berrer after he beat African wild card Kevin Anderson 6-3 6-3, while defending champion Novak Djokovic will play Martin Vassallo Arguello as he downed South African Rik De Voest 7-5 7-6 (7/3).

Elsewhere 49th-ranked Sam Querrey thwarted Argentina's Guillermo Canas 7-6 (7/2) 6-2 in one hour and 21 minutes.

In the women's draw world number two Dinara Safina made her way into the third round with victory over Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova 7-6 (10/8) 6-2.

She will face 28th-seeded Peng Shuai who advanced earlier in the day.

Fourth-seeded Vera Zvonareva was also in action, beating Chan Yung-Jan of Taiwan 6-2 6-2, while eighth-seeded Victoria Azarenka of Belarus rallied for a 4-6 7-5 6-3 victory over Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan.
