Djokovic makes third round

World number three Novak Djokovic moved into the third round of the BNP Paribas Open with a victory over Martin Vassallo Arguello.

The Serbian, who is also seeded third at Indian Wells, was given a good workout by his Argentinian opponent on Stadium One but was ultimately too classy and progressed in straight sets, 7-5 6-4.

Elsewhere in the men's draw today, 16th seed Stanislas Wawrinka thrashed Italy's Andreas Seppi 6-1 6-3, while David Ferrer, seeded 12th, was more extended by Todd Widom but still won through 6-4 7-5.

Home favourite Mardy Fish was narrowly defeated 7-6 (7/4) 7-6 (7/1) by French 20th seed Jeremy Chardy and German veteran Nicolas Kiefer beat Bobby Reynolds 6-4 6-2.

In the women's tournament, two seeds, Vera Zvonareva and Caroline Wozniacki, made is safely through to the last eight.

Russian Zvonareva, the fourth seed, was far too good for Czech Petra Kvitova in her 6-3 6-1 victory, while Denmark's ninth seed Wozniacki needed three sets to see off Kaia Kanepi of Estonia 6-3 3-6 6-3.
