ITF awards Davis Cup tie to India

ITF awards Davis Cup tie to India

The International Tennis Federation has awarded India's Davis Cup tie against Australia to India after Tennis Australia pulled out.

Tennis Australia, which pulled out of their Davis Cup clash against the Indians in Chennai citing security reasons, also face the risk of being banned from the tournament for one year.

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) board had earlier rejected an appeal by Tennis Australia to shift the Asia/Oceania Zone Group I third round tie out of India because of security concerns.

Meanwhile, Indian tennis legend, Leander Paes said he was very disappointed by Australia's decision to pull out of the tie.

"It is extremely disappointing that Australia has decided not to come to Chennai.

"The ITF has examined the facilities and declared the tie safe as far as security is concerned.

"The safe conduct of Chennai Open this January and the assurances of the TN government should have been guarantee enough.

It's unfortunate that Australia has taken this extreme step."
