"Doubles would help me in singles"

Somdev Devvarman in an exclusive chat with espnstar.com’s Rajarshi Gupta reveals his excitement about being in the top league.

Young and vibrant Indian Davis Cupper, Somdev, represents the new era of India's tennis riches. He has chalked out his priorities rather smartly as he says, "I don't think playing doubles is a detriment, in fact it will help me get better in singles. I will keep in mind that singles remain my priority."

He has a long way to go and as he covers a promising journey, the youngster exudes confidence and pride, not arrogance.

Somdev feels it's an honour to be playing alongside Peas and Bhupthi.

"It is a privilege to be a part of Indian Davis Cup side. Both Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi are legends. I feel privileged to be with them," Somdev says.

Though he admits he's still playing in the shadow of these stalwarts, the excitement is hard to miss. Somdev is also optimistic about the current tennis talent in the country.

"Sania Mirza is a great player and I hardly need to say anything about her. Yuki Bhambri is also a great young talent and there are other good young players and the scene is looking pretty good in India," he says.

Does Somdev feel letdown or discouraged by sheer weight of cricket and its prominence in India? Pat comes the reply, "Cricket is the biggest sport in India and young people should not bother about anything else other than playing the sport they like. It does not bother me for sure."

With his vision firmly set on making a mark as singles player and contributing to India's Davis Cup success, this young lad sure looks destined to go the distance.
