Engaged Sania serious about US Open

espnstar.com spoke exclusively to Indian tennis sensation Sania Mirza after her engagement with Sohrab Mirza.

By Sudeer Mahavaadi

Q: Congratulations Sania. How did the engagement go about?

SM:
It was very good in but pretty hectic as well. Certainly, we were all very happy but again that was the end of it and I have to get back to tennis.

Q: Was it true that you were the main choreographer for the function?

SM: Absolutely not. I just came five, six days before the ceremony. My mum had organised everything single handedly. Hats off to her. As I told you, it was pretty hectic for all of us. I and my dad were touring.

All we had to do on our return was distributing invite cards. All our family members came and everyone chipped in. So it went very fine. I just knew the colour of my dress and that's all.

Q: Coming back to tennis how is the preparation going on for the big US Open?

SM: Well just two days after the engagement I am back to practice. I am hitting the ball well. You can just imagine how serious I am for the up coming events. I have lots of weeks left before the big event.  I have to get back into the playing zone and compete on the surface. I am confident of a good show.

Q: Is Shorab a tennis lover?

SM: Not much in fact but he followed my tennis (laughs). He will do that as well. I think when he is sitting alone he likes to do something else.

Q: Would you mind sharing some cherished moments with Shorab?

SM: Nothing in fact. We have known each other for a long time. Everything is very personal, so I am sorry. But our families had known each other for generations. That is how it happened.

Q: Which hard-court tourneys are you going to play?

SM: Well I am going to play in Lexin and Standford. I still have five-six weeks of time left. I think I will get enough practice in these.

Q: You had sweet memories of the US Open in 2007.

SM: Well, that is true. 2008 was pretty tough, and I was plagued by injuries. It is part and parcel of our sport, any sport for that matter. But I came back strongly and competed well to expectations. That was very important for me. Yes I am very healthy now. I have remained pretty fit the whole year. The beginning was fantastic and I hope I will end on a happy note.

Q: You mean to say you have no fitness worries?

SM: Well small niggles are always there. Otherwise, everything is pretty okay.

Q: You are engaged now and a day will soon come you have to part with your parents. How difficult it will be for your?

SM: Well one has to. It is still going to one and a half years. But our house is just ten minutes away (laughs). I can go and come anytime. And more importantly after my tennis, I am just going to be in Hyderabad. Right now I have no other plans.

Q: Any special message for the espnstar.com readers?

SM: Well, thanks for all your support. I am always going to be indebted to their love and support.
