Elsewhere, Latvia's Ernests Gulbis saw off Taiwan's Yen-hsun Lu 7-5, 6-2, Australia's Carsten Ball defeated France's Marc Gicquel 6-2 7-6, America's Ryan Sweeting beat compatriot Taylor Dent 6-4 2-6 6-3, while Russia's Igor Kunitsyn knocked out India's Somdev Devvarman 7-5, 6-2.
