Monaco progress continues in Romania

Juan Monaco booked a meeting with Pablo Cuevas in the last eight of the BCR Open Romania with a victory over Pere Riba.

The world number 37 defeated Spanish qualifier Riba 6-4 6-2 in 79 minutes today as he looks to claim his fourth ATP World Tour clay-court title.

Uruguayan world number 59 Cuevas took just under two hours to beat Australia's Peter Luczak 7-5 6-4.

Argentinian Maximo Gonzalez reached his third ATP World Tour clay-court quarter-final after defeating Spain's Oscar Hernandez 7-5 3-6 6-1.

He will now meet Simon Greul who is one place behind Gonzalez in the rankings at 68.

The German saved 11 of 12 break points and served 11 aces to overcome sixth seed Daniel Koellerer 6-1 6-4.

Former world number 13 Andrei Pavel announced his retirement from tennis after losing to Cuevas yesterday.

The Romanian won three singles titles and seven doubles titles with a quarter-final appearance in the 2002 French Open his best effort in a grand slam.

The 35-year-old has moved his family to the United States where he hopes to open a tennis academy while also helping to develop Romanian tennis.
