The eighth seed was dumped out by unseeded Swede Joachim Johansson with a 7-6 (9-7) 6-3 defeat after a below-par performance from the former world number one.

In other first-round action seventh seed David Ferrer was knocked out by Russia's Mikhail Youzhny, losing 7-6 (7-3) 6-2.

Czech Tomas Berdych, the sixth seed, was a 6-1 3-6 6-2 winner against Russia's Igor Kunitsyn.

Slovakian Karol Beck beat Mikhail Kukushkin, Rohan Bopanna of India knocked out Jose Acasuso and Feliciano Lopez of Spain lost in straight sets to Argentinian Martin Vassallo Arguello.
