
Williams makes smooth progress
Venus Williams moved into the second round of the China Open in Beijing with a straight sets win over Russian Vera Dushevina.
The number three seed - who won Olympic gold at the same venue last year - completed a comfortable 6-2 7-6 (7/1) victory in one hour and 40 minutes, serving six aces.
In the day's other main matches, number 10 seed Flavia Pennetta, from Italy, beat Chinese wild card Han Xinyun 7-6 (7/2) 6-2.
Number 15 seed Samantha Stosur is out after the Australian was beaten 4-6 6-4 3-6 by Frenchwoman Alize Cornet.
Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova is through after she beat Sybille Bammer of Austria 7-5 6-1.
