Monfils and Wawrinka progress

Gael Monfils and Stanislas Wawrinka both progressed to the second round at the Rakuten Japan Open in Tokyo.

Fourth seed Monfils defeated qualifier Marsel Ilhan, who at the recent US Open became the first Turkish player to win a main-draw match at a grand slam event, 6-2 6-4.

Wawrinka, seeded seventh, saw off another man to make a name for himself at Flushing Meadows, John Isner.

The 6ft 9in American defeated Andy Roddick in reaching the fourth round but he found Wawrinka too strong today, losing 6-4 6-4 to the Swiss.

Marco Chiudinelli became the second Swiss player to reach the second round with a 4-6 6-1 6-4 victory over Israel's Dudi Sela while Simon Greul defeated Martin Vassallo Arguello 4-6 6-4 6-2.
