Serena eyes Fed Cup final spot
Serena Williams wants to play in next month's Fed Cup final.
Despite having not playing in any of this season's matches so far, the Wimbledon champion wants to be in the USA side which takes on Italy in Reggio Calabria.
"I definitely want to get there," Williams said.
However, the American said she would have to assess her fitness following the WTA Tour's final event of the season, the Sony Ericsson Championships, which takes place the previous week in Qatar.
She added: "It's just hard to see how my body will be after Doha.
"(But) if I'm walking, then I really want to go. I have to go."
Williams, who has won all seven of the Fed Cup rubbers she has played, has not competed in the Fed Cup since April 2007.
Mary Joe Fernandez, the American captain, must now decide whether to call upon Williams or stick with the lowly-ranked players who against the odds got the team to the final.
Melanie Oudin, Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Alexa Glatch have all played important parts in their run, while doubles specialist Liezel Huber provides plenty of experience.
"We have great people like Melanie who I think can really do a job, and Liezel, who's number one in doubles," added Williams. "We have a really good team and quite frankly they got there without me but I'd really like to go there in support."
The final takes place on a claycourt from November 7-8.
