Tennis maybe his first love but birthday boy Somdev, who turns 25 today has a lot more to keep him busy off the court. There is someone he wants to court. Who would that be? Excerpts from an exclusive chat:
Bhagya Ayyavoo: Tell us about Twitter. Is it one of your favourite pastimes these days?
Somdev Devvarman: I really enjoy it. I think it's a great way to stay in touch with not just fans but also with friends. It’s a lot more personal and it's a great way to know what’s going on with people you're friends with or fans of.
BA: When did you join this Twitterati bandwagon? Did someone introduce you to it?
SD: I knew Andy Roddick was on it quite a lot so I checked it out and opened my own account. I've started using Twitter a lot more only recently.
BA: Your fans know almost everything about you these days, from your new Dane pup, to the bomb scare when you were taking the flight to Serbia recently. I personally came across this fan of yours in Mumbai, who was worried as to what was keeping you from tweeting (I guess, when you were held up at the airport). How does this make you feel about how connected you are with your fans and how much they care for you?
SD: I think it's really great. I didn't really know that I had too many fans following me but I guess that’s pretty cool. It’s also great to know I have fans that care and are genuinely interested about my whereabouts and how I am when I’m not on the tennis court. I guess I need to put up a twitter picture soon!!
BA: Can we call this a hobby? As a tennis player, does it help you relax in a way?
SD: Yes, I guess it is relaxing and fun. I really enjoy it and I enjoy following some friends and people I'm fans of.
BA: How often do you tweet?
SD: Probably once every couple days. I go through phases though when I tweet 2-3 times a day. It’s pretty addicting.
BA: Do you know how many people follow you on twitter?
SD: Not quite sure about that but about 3-400 people? (laughs)
BA: Do you interact with fellow players as well through twitter? How many people do you follow on twitter?
SD: Yes actually. I stay in touch with Mahesh (Bhupathi) and follow him quite a bit. It’s fun to know what we all are up to. I also follow Andy (Roddick) Rajeev Ram and some other players and friends.
BA: Has Twitter changed the world around you?
SD: It hasn’t really changed the world around me too much but it's definitely a lot more fun for me to get on my phone and see who’s up to what. And also its fun reading other peoples’ comments on my tweets.
BA: If you are to pick one ‘Tweet’ that made you mad, which one would that be?
SD: Nothing has really made me mad. Sometimes I see some people's comments on mine or other people’s posts and I don't necessarily agree with them, but I guess we’re all allowed to have our opinions.
BA: Is there something that you don't like about Twitter?
SD: Same as above.
BA: You’re 25 today, what gifts are you expecting?
SD: (Laughs) Nothing really. I think I’ve reached the age when I don't get too excited about getting much older. But it's good now because I'm in Serbia, hanging around with some friends on the tour and my good friend and strength coach Milos.
BA: With Valentine's Day, the very next day after your birthday, do you have some plans?
SD: Nothing too exciting, unfortunately. Hopefully I'll have a hot date!
BA: Anybody in particular you always wanted as a dream date?
SD: I've always been a huge fan of Cameron Diaz. I guess she'd be a dream date!
Somdev is in Serbia to participate in the ATP Challenger tournament that starts on February 15.
